Surgery

At Friendly Animal Clinic, our Surgery services go far beyond just the operating theatre. Our experienced veterinary surgical team is equipped to handle everything from routine elective procedures (like spaying/neutering) to more complex soft tissue surgeries, eye operations, and corrective procedures such as cruciate ligament repairs.

We use the latest anaesthetic monitoring technology to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort throughout the procedure. Before surgery, we provide a detailed pre-op check, explain all risks, and ensure you understand post-op care at home to support a smooth recovery. Our modern surgical facilities are sterilised to high standards and staffed with trained surgical nurses who assist both in theatre and recovery.

General Practice

We believe good veterinary care starts with consistent, preventative care. Our General Practice encompasses everything you need to keep your pet healthy and thriving through all stages of its life. This includes comprehensive health checks (tailored by age, breed, and lifestyle), up-to-date vaccinations, and parasite control (fleas, ticks, worms). As your pet ages, we offer senior care assessments, nutritional advice, and monitoring for age-related conditions. We also provide microchipping to help you stay in control if your pet ever becomes lost, and if you’re planning international travel, we’ll help with travel certification and ensure your pet meets the necessary health and vaccination requirements.

Diagnostics & Imaging

Rapid, accurate diagnosis is at the heart of effective treatment. With Diagnostics & Imaging, we have in-house lab capabilities meaning many blood tests, urinalysis, and other diagnostics can be done same-day, avoiding delays. Our digital X-ray and ultrasound equipment allow us to go beyond surface symptoms and get a clear view inside your pet’s body—bones, organs, soft tissues. Whether it’s detecting a hidden injury, monitoring internal organs, or screening for disease, we aim to deliver precise results. These tools, along with expert interpretation, guide us in planning the most effective treatment.

Surgery & Medical Care

Under Surgery & Medical Care, we offer a full spectrum of medical interventions beyond elective surgery. This includes treatment of illnesses, chronic conditions, dental disease, eye disorders, dermatological issues, and more. Our surgical care includes not just the operation itself, but pre-surgery preparation (blood work, anaesthetic assessments), diligent pain management, post-surgery follow-up, wound monitoring and rehabilitation where applicable. We partner surgical technique with medicine—ensuring that after surgery, any underlying medical conditions are also addressed to support overall health.

Nurse Clinics

Our Nurse Clinics are run by qualified veterinary nurses, offering attentive, specialised care for many of the “everyday but important” aspects of pet health. You can come in for secondary vaccinations, nail trims, weight management consultations, post-operative checks, wound care, and small animal MOTs. These clinics provide an opportunity for regular touchpoints—often quicker and more affordable than a full vet appointment—for preventive care. We also advise owners on nutrition, dental hygiene, and general wellness to help avoid serious problems later.

Medication & Prescriptions

We believe in safe, accessible medication care. Our Medication & Prescriptions service ensures that if your pet needs pharmaceuticals—whether for a short-term illness or long-term condition—you have easy access to them. We stock many common veterinary medicines on site and provide prescriptions when needed. Importantly, we require regular vet check-ups (at least every six months for ongoing medications) so that treatment remains appropriate, doses are reviewed, and any side effects are monitored. We also provide clear instructions and support, so you feel confident managing your pet’s medications at home.

Behavioural Advice

Pets communicate their needs often through behaviour. If your pet is showing anxiety, aggression, house training difficulties, phobias, or other behavioural issues, our Behavioural Advice service offers expert guidance. Our team will assess your pet’s history, environment, triggers, and temperament, then help you understand why the behaviour is happening. We provide actionable plans—training recommendations, environmental changes, and referral to a specialist behaviourist if needed. The goal is to improve life for both pet and owner, not just suppress the behaviour but address its root causes.

Emergency & Out of Hours

We know emergencies don’t always happen during regular hours. For out-of-hours emergencies, we will see you at our clinic, Monday to Thursday but our trusted partners at West Mount Vets, Pellon Lane, Halifax, provide care for our patients with an emergency service from Friday evening through the weekend—from Saturday 1pm until Monday 9am. You can rest assured that your pet will receive immediate, professional care if the unexpected happens.

Our Facilities

We believe that quality veterinary care depends not just on the skill of staff, but the environment. In our facilities, you’ll find four large consulting rooms, a quiet and separate cat ward, and a dedicated dog ward. We have three fully equipped surgical theatres and a specialised dental suite, alongside a diagnostic imaging suite and an in-house laboratory for rapid testing. Our design focuses on your pet’s wellbeing at every step—pre, during, and post-treatment—with hygiene, safety, comfort, and speed in mind.

Community & Charity Support

We’re proud to be part of the community. Through Community & Charity Support, we work with local and national rescue organisations and shelters such as, Cats Protection, Dogs Trust and Guide dogs. We work alongside our community in the care of Sowerby Bridge pets and wildlife, including the Sowerby Bridge geese! They are always up to mischief and occasionally need our care.

Pet Travel

It has been in the news this year that we will return to using Pet Passports for travel abroad with our companions.

There is no date set on this yet so for the foreseeable future we will be issuing Animal Health Certificates (AHC's) for the most common journeys to Europe. Other countries will require an Export Health Certificate which we can advise on and complete. For an AHC, the pet requires a microchip identification, followed by a vaccination against Rabies virus.

21 days after the vaccination we can issue the AHC (not before). We will work out timings with you as you have to travel to the EU within 10 days of the AHC being signed. The AHC is valid for 4months which presently is longer than we can stay in the EU so it does cover enough time for your holidays and journeys. You need the AHC in date to return to the UK. The UK Rabies vaccination that we use has an expiry (interval) of 3 years so you can have repeat travel after one vaccination for 3 years, but the vaccination must be valid (in date) for all of your travel dates. Booster vaccinations given before expiry allows for the next travel plans without having to wait the initial 21 day period again.

However the AHC is only valid for one trip at a time (out and back), so you need a fresh AHC per journey. This is where it is expected that the Passport will be of benefit as you can travel repeatedly using it so long as the Rabies vaccination is in date.

We can combine cats and dogs on the AHC. Ferrets can also go on holiday on this scheme, but we are yet to wave a ferret off on an adventure. The other main travel requirement is a tapeworm treatment (Echinococcus multilocularis) for dogs (not cats) given before return to the UK, which must be recorded on the AHC by a VET. This is to be done between 24 and 120 hours of the return to the UK (there are exceptions to how this operates eg to travel to Ireland the tapeworm dose is given before you go, not on the return from Ireland to GB). We will advise on the requirements according to your travel plans and the GOV.UK website has up to date information. Please always remember that the UK and Ireland are currently free from Rabies and this tapeworm and we need to keep it that way, all these travel requirements are there to protect ourselves and our pets.
